Gaining from giving, why high performing successful people give!

ImageThere was once a man who had built his fortune to gain material possessions, He had the luxury homes, he had the finest cars, he wore the trendiest clothing, and dined in the finest restaurants, yet for some reason he still wasn’t feeling fulfilled or happy. He thought to himself for a second maybe if he bought a home that was rare on the marketplace he would be happier.

So after he acquired his new property he still realized that he was happy he gained the property but still wasn’t 100% happy and satisfied, Till one day a good friend of his encouraged him to come along with him to a charity function located in Africa, after a bit of reluctance he decided to go with his friend.

Upon his arrival he was greeted by all these children, they were living in poor conditions, they had nothing, yet they were humble and filled with love, when he looked into their eyes he could feel they were genuinely excited to see him.

After his stay he was touched by what he had experienced, he decided to donate a large amount of his wealth to these less fortunate kids filled with love and hope. After a few month’s he returned to see these children, they all came to him and embraced him with a gratitude he felt so powerful it moved him to the very core.

At that moment for the first time in awhile he felt 100% truly satisfied and happy, he realized he gained more from these children than what he had given and was motivated to continue to do so by setting up a company that provided a service that was not only highly profitable but 20% of the proceeds went to help aid children like the one’s he had grown to love.

A study conducted by Professor Adam Grant from the University of Pennsylvania on over 100’s of salespeople for 1 year suggested that those who had the most revenue in their results were the salespeople who demonstrated a genuine concern for benefiting others.

When you display a genuine concern to benefit another person right from the very start, you are give that person’s trust, and as we all know experts say that all good relationships have a strong foundation of trust. Though these high performers also were also careful, they did give in a way that highly benefited the customer but were not exceedingly to costly to their own interests.

Bennett S. LeBow chairman of the board and CEO of Borders Group and also Chairman of the board to Vector Group donated $49 million to Drexel Univesity for a new academic center for Drexel’s business school.

Ming Hsieh, Founder of AMAX information technologies gave away $50 million to the University of Southern California for establising the Ming Hsieh Institute for Engineering Medicine for Cancer.

Another generous giver is George Soros financier and Chairman of the Soros Fund Management gave a whopping $332 Million dollars to Open Society Foundations, to support the development of democratic institutions.

People like that who give attract good attention to themselves, from other businesses, people who want to make a difference and will be rewarded by receiving profit to their organisations, by people who are touched or who have benefited because of their actions which shows that giving can be a very powerful way to achieve success in any field.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be money, if you can give friendship, advice, your skills for the highest benefit of a customer, it will be returned to you in terms of them advertising your firm, your business, through their networks their friends, their associates, in term growing your own network, growing your relationships so you have people to come to when you have something to offer they will invest their time, trust, and money back to show appreciation and gratitude and in turn will increase your altitude for success.
